Converting 59.94 footage to 23.976 - Help!

Hi,

I have some video that was captured from a DVCPRO720 tape. It's 59.94 progressive. Unfortunately this is all that was made available to me.

I need to put this in a 23.976 timeline, but when I do I get horrible looking motion. I tried re-rendering it as 29.97 and dropping that into the timeline, but every 3rd frame or so seems to be doubled, and the motion still looks awful.
I'm not trying to turn this into slow motion, just convert it straight across from 60 to 24.

Can anyone help me with the proper way to convert this into a true 23.976 file with proper motion? I have searched high and low for hours unable to find the answer.

Thank you.

I assume this footage was shot at 60p, and not as 24p or 30p and recorded at 60p? When you play it back at 59.94, does it look "live"?

Take the footage into Media Encoder.

Make sure frame blending is disabled.

Export as 23.976.

If the footage is 24p in a 60p stream, which is possible, then what you want to do is remove pulldown.

If the footage is 30p in a 60p stream, which is possible, then conversion to 24p just isn't workable; motion will be horrible. In fact, it will be a lot like you describe, so is it 30p? Or perhaps that was just the artifact from your converting it to 30p, which is absolutely not what you want to do.

You can determine this by examining the footage on a 60p timeline. Go through it frame-by-frame. Is every frame repeated (shown twice)? Then it's 30p. Is one frame repeated (shown 2x), then the next shown 3 times? Then it's 24p.

Hi David,

I just examined the footage. One frame is repeated twice, and then the next one 3 times. So it's definitely 24p. It's old archival film that was shot on 35mm, this dvcpro tape is the government's storage medium and the only way I can get it.

Can I do pulldown removal in media encoder? The last time i've heard that term was back when I had my HV30 and was messing around with virtual dub.

Will have to check; not in front of my machine at the moment. Can definitely do it in After Effects. Will revisit later today.

AME doesn't have the option to remove pulldown.

If you can't get pulldown removed (like by using After Effects), then your best bet will be to simply edit on a 60p timeline. It'll retain its 24 fps look.
