Convert .dat to quicktime

I have some video from a VCD in .dat format. Anyone know how to get it into a format that FCP can handle. I have heard that the only way is to pump it out to tape and then recapture it. I don't really know how to bring it to tape if I can't open it in FCP. Any ideas?

I think the tape method is to use a device like a DVD player that supports VCD playback to dub the video to another source which you can handle. As for the direct approach, I'm not sure how the video can be converted.

Does a player like VLC Media Player work on the file? IIRC, you might be able to use that to convert the video into a usable source.
