Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q+ Hand On Review

Hi Erik,great job,thanks..
I would like to ask your opinion about the Odyssey Q+ vs Shogun just as a monitor!?
I need to buy another monitor and I was thinking about Shogun or Odyssey Q+ as a monitor and all the extra they have as a recorder is just a big plus for me,even if I will not be using that much as a recorder! I will be using them primarily as a monitor.
Which one would recommend more on the screen side of quality!? I know you have both!right?
Thanks in advance
Samer

As far as the screens go they are very similar. The 7Q+ comes with a screen protector and that also seems to help with finger prints.

I like the touch screen better on the 7Q+ because it's one tap to open the tools. The Shogun requires a sub menu and more tapping to turn the tool on.

If you need 4K to HD down-convert from the device to feed a EVF or another monitor the 7Q+ does that with both SDI and HDMI.
At this time the7Q+ has it. The Shogun will come later in a update.

The overall build is better and you have more battery options. I'm disappointed in the build of the Shogun. Top vents have a fan and not sure if stuff could fall inside the monitor with those openings. My copy has a issue with the power button getting stuck inside. I'm actually looking into sending it back for either a refund or exchange. I'm right at the 30 day mark. it's hard to say how durable the Shogun is because it's so new but it doesn't feel like a quality built device. Not saying it isn't or it wont last but just doesn't feel like it.

The Shogun comes with a bunch of stuff in the kit and the case is very nice. I understand Atomos is going to offer a bigger battery now and replace the original for existing owners. Thats cool. A hood is also done and it looks like it might be free.

Thanks for the review Eric. I'm currently using a Shogun with my GH4 (non-YAGH) and there's a pretty significant delay going over HDMI. I've read other folks commenting on the delay over HDMI, but didn't know if the Shogun was also contributing. Did you notice any difference between Shogun and Odyssey 7Q+ in terms of delay, or is the issue entirely related to the GH4?

Just what I wanted to see, Erik, Thanks.

Got my unit a couple of days ago, still haven't powered it up.

I do note that I did not receive a USB to SSD adapter to read the included SSD drives, and I see no evidence of that being included based on forum comments and on vendor advertising. Perhaps they sent you one as a courtesy??

Indeed, we do not include a SATA to USB3 adapter with the Odyssey7Q+ at this time. We provided one to Erik for his review.

Nope. It's a GH4 issue and I sure was hoping the new firmware update would fix this. Drives me crazy!

Ooops. Sorry about that. I wish I could update the Youtube review. I took that statement out of the Vimeo version.

3rd party adapters are fairly inexpensive.

Thanks a lot Erik, I think I'll go with the Odessey Q+ then. I see many happy CD customers around and i'm already one of them as i have the nanoflash which is a great device that i still use today and it never let me down!
Mitch, in another thread i asked about the SSD offer in EU and you have replied (thanks),and I see that CVP have this offer so i'll get it there.

I shot this promo with the A7s in 4K recorded to the Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q+. Worked flawlessly. Camera triggered the recorder even though it doesn't record internally. The footage is really nice from the A7s. Full frame looks amazing but oh that gello!

You have shown other footage that you have shot for your station on the A7S. I continue to be impressed with the A7S footage you have shot. Everyone likes to post videos of the A7S working with a single candle as a light source....interesting to watch but after the 10th example it gets little long in the tooth..lol

I understand that you shot in 4K 8 bit to the Odyssey, did you down res the 4K footage to 1080 4:4:4 ?

Thanks for the review, cheers

I edited in Premiere Pro CC2014 in a 1080 timeline with C300 footage too. Worked very well. Did a little reframing but not much. I was worried that our mid 2010 Mac Pro 2.93 GHz 6 Core Xeon would struggle but it was fine. CUDA helps. Hard to believe I can edit 4K on a five year old computer.

Here is a 4K frame grab. Shot with the Canon 100mm Macro. LOVE THAT LENS! Tried to embed it but seems to not be able to for some reason.

To Mitch Gross, is there a single page anywhere that shows what the Odyssey 7Q+ can do with every potential camera choice?

Funny you should ask: I'm working on just such a list. It's quite voluminous, and the vast majority of them are supported with no additional charge.

Hope to have it soon. Is there any particular camera(s) or camera-type I can help you with in the interim?

Mitch, looking for the PMW-F3 and the Canon 1DC benefits. I searched, never felt I found the mother load of info. Thanks.

From the 1DC the benefits are relatively limited. The camera can record in 4K but does not output it, so we cannot capture that resolution. In 1080p I believe it can output up to 60, which we can record directly on the Odyssey7Q+ over SDI or HDMI. On the Odyssey7 and Odssey7Q the signal needs to be converted to SDI for us to record that frame rate, otherwise we are limited to 1080p30 or 1080i60.

The Odyssey7Q and Odyssey7Q+ off far greater support for the F3. That camera can output 1080 4:4:4 up to 30p or 4:2:2 up to 60p. We can capture the 4:4:4 in DPX stacks and the 60p in ProRes. Soon we will be able to capture the 4:4:4 in compressed video as well. We also incorporate the S-Log LUT in the Odyssey, so you can output Log from the camera, record that on the Odyssey, and still see a normalized image to set lighting and exposure.

Thanks, Mitch.

FYI, got a U series battery plate today made by Convergent design and the hole spacing left to right was off by 1/2 the diameter of a screw hole. The manufacturer must not have any QC procedures to catch an error like that.

Thanks, Mitch, I just drilled the holes out larger, just wanted you to know because I know you care.
