I just saw this film last night and I thought it was a quietly devastating and beautiful film. I've never seen a rock biopic even remotely like it, and for anyone that thought the art of black and white was nearly extinct in filmmaking, this film will make you happy.

For those that don't know the story of Ian Curtis and Joy Division...well...it's bleak...but this film is really worth seeing. If you are a fan of the ill-fated band and know Ian's story, you'll feel like Sam Riley

absolutely channeled him.

The film was directed by Anton Corbijn, a famous photographer and music video director (Depeche Mode, etc) and it wasn't anything like I expected.

Highly recommended if you want to see something original and different.

Being a fan of Joy Division and New Order, this was a must see. I second the recommendation.

I've just watched this and I really enjoyed it. I didn't know Joy Division and I wanted to check this flick out because it was directed by long time music video wizard Anton Corbijn. He managed to make an interesting film even for people who didn't know the band. Additionally I may say it was really beautifully shot in a variety of black and white tonalities that made me wonder why don't I shoot more B&W. The acting was very good and the lead was a clone of Ian Curtis!

i know this thread is old, but i just saw control last week and had to echo the sentiments here. joy division and new order were two of the bands i first got in to when i was a kid. so on top of seeing ian's bio, the film was amazing. cinematography reminded me of citizen kane in that every shot was intentional and told it's own story in a compelling way. i've already watched the film three times. an instant classic for me.
