Contrast or DeNoise first?

My eye is seeing a difference by the order I put the Brightness/Contrast or DeNoiser FX in ... but I'm wondering if anyone has a theory on why one should be before the other.

DeNoise first, then add contrast ....

OR

Add contrast, then DeNoise?

I'm wondering if adding the contrast first & brightness levels will perhaps help to get rid of some noise in the darks, and then bring out the noise more in the light areas, so the DeNoiser won't have to worry about the dark stuff & can focus on the light areas (I know it's not smart, but you know what I mean).

Because everyone's eye can be subjective, so I was wondering if there was a reason for one over the other. That said, just looking at frame grabs, I prefer having the contrast/brightness first.

It's amazing how much you can change your look(s), just with the placement order of the filters.

Yes thats one of the great things in vegas.

I think in wich order will depend on your footage. Contrast/brighnes can boost the noise and then it gets harder to remove.

And my tip, even if its the eye of the beholder, if you like it do it that way. You should never make a movie for anybody else. If others like it to thats just a bonus.

Yes thats one of the great things in vegas.

That's one of the great things about almost any NLE :D

Increasing contrast would probably insrease the noise for easier detection and removal. Either that or crush it (if it's in the shadows). Hard to say which would be better.

I think with the DeNoiser there's probably not any actual detection that's going on ... I get the impression it just blends the fields ever so slightly, depending on the setting you put it at (1-30). The REALLY annoying thing I see with DeNoiser (anyone else experience this?), is that ever once in a while a frame just goes to crap ... like it's been building up all this blending for a while and then dumps it on one frame .... hopefully it's fast enough that others don't really see it.

Is this Denoiser a plug in already in Vegas or a seperate software? I usually use median with light noise reduction. Just curious about the actual application.

De-noise is free from Mike Crash's website.

http://mikecrash.wz.cz/vegas/vegas.htm

It works via temporal noise detection... it compares the difference between the current frame and the previous frame. If the pixels are similar, it'll use the pixels from the previous frame. That may explain the dumping effect.

Yeah, it's not a consistant dump, but just a random frame I'd say every 3-4 seconds.

To answer jgastelb's Q: DeNoiser is a plug-in that works directly within Vegas, though you have to download it separately (check out Glenn Chan's link) and install. I just checked out the Median FX with the light noise reduction (never even knew that was there!), but it appears to REALLY soften the image.

Since we're using 35mm adapters, which already soften it to some degree, though that median does an EXCELLENT job of getting rid of most of the noise, it also softens the image too much, IMO.

Envision,
Yeah... The median plug in can be helpful when your image is super sharp. I'm glad I read this post. I'll give that denoiser plug in a try and see what it does for my footage. I use the letus35a and I'm thinking it may help take some of that extra grain that comes with GG.

Glenn,
I just went to the link for the denoise and all of the plug in downloads lead to a dead link.
