Okay, I'm currently working on a feature length script that centers around a very specific set of sounds. In fact, without these sounds, there is no movie.

Now there's a VERY SMALL record company that has released a CD of these sounds. In fact, this CD gave me the entire idea for the script. I would like to use samples from this CD in the movie. Now oddly enough, anyone can go out and get these sounds, it's not like they're exclusive to this CD.

Well, I'd like to contact this company to let them know about my project. I know they've worked with one other movie (although their movie only used the sounds briefly and didn't discuss them at all; my movie is ALL about the sounds) so I'm hopeful that they will be responsive.

What's the most professional way of contacting this company? Just a simple e-mail explaining that I'd like to use their sounds? Anyone have a template I can use?

At this point I don't even have a company name... Or a movie title... It's still in very early pre-production. Should I wait until I have a completed script?

Any advice would be appreciated.

And yes, this idea is completely original. As far as I can find, there has never been a movie done about this and I'm quite excited to finish the script and get started on the film. :)

I would at least get the script finished. They may want to see it.

I agree with Arcburn and I can't wait to see it. Any film that was inspired by a CD full of sounds, should at least be interesting. Keep us posted.

Yeah, I really, really wish I could give you some more information about the project but I think it's best to keep it under wraps so nobody beats me to the punch. :)

I'll keep you all updated.

Edit: And the CD full of sounds is probably the last thing you'd ever think of... It's probably something that most people are NOT familiar with. Hence my secrecy with the whole thing...

You might have to be prepared to pay for the rights. Unless these sounds can be traced back to the label how will they even know that you didn't get them from a sound effects disk.

Well, it's not exactly sound effects disc material. It could be traced back to the label BUT I could also go out and record the sounds myself. It would just be easier to use theirs.
