A light meter can help with getting consistent contrast ratios. Having an assistant takes notes on the setups is also very helpful (aka camera reports)
Additionally, shooting strictly on overcast days makes it a lot easier to keep a consistent look because you don't have to worry much about where the sun should be in the sky and how intense it should be.
