Connecting PA mixing desk to HVX202 / AF102

What is the type of connection that I need between a PA mixing desk and an HVX202 or AF102?

Not talking about connectors...just the stuff like "line out levels" etc

I need the terminology for when I discuss it with the audio engineer.

I deally I would like to get a feed via my radio gear but previously found this to be problematic.

A cable will be fine this time. BTW - its a music live performance gig and the recording is reference only.

It really depends on the mixer used.

The output could come on either XLR, 1/4balanced 1/4 not balanced, rca.

The level outs could be +4db line +0db line, -10db line
Or mic level.

Inside of those levels the signal strength really depends on how the engineer is mixing.
I find it very common that they send extremely weak signals which of course can add a LOT of noise when you gain it up on your end to a workable signal strength.

Other than that, I personally am not 100% sure what you are asking for if you don't need advice on actual connectors/connections.

You should have the ability to deal with either mic or line level, with XLR, 1/4" or RCA connectors as a minimum.

Talk to the venue guys before the day of the shoot to see if they're able to accommodate you. Never just show up and expect a feed to be available.

Even if they tell you they'll give you a particular type / level connection, show up able to deal with anything they throw at you.

My guess is (as I've done a fair amount of stuff like this) is that they'll throw you a line level out of the aux sends.

Line level Out to Line In on the camera would be simple and easy I assume. ( I dont understand anything to do about "balanced")

If they were to provide a signal to my Sony radio transmitter..what level would be required. (Mic level in... I guess?) Just dont know if a mix desk can output mic level.

I just do not have access to the desk and the engineer until just before the gig. (I am hoping to be a bit prepared and also not sound like the audio klutz that I am)

BTW: Connectors and cables arent the issue. I know about XLR and RCA. Having them of the right "sex" on the correct end of the cable is another matter!

Your 1/4" and rca cables should be male-male, and your XLR male-female, but carry enough gender-changers for each channel of each connection type.

A balanced signal uses 3 connectors to carry a single channel of audio while rejected outside interference. This is usually done using XLR or 1/4" TRS connectors. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balanced_audio for more explanation.) Anytime you're running more than about 10', you really want to go balanced. Most boards should be labeled at each jack.

Again, do everything you can to contact the venue engineer before the day of the shoot to arrange your feed. They've got a lot to do in a short time and providing a feed for you is not something that's in their job description, it's a courtesy that they may or may not be able to extend to you depending on a number of factors that they probably don't have control over.
