Connecting Mac Pro to Panasonic BT-LH2550 monitor for Color

Dear All,

I am planning to have a setup to connect a Panasonic BT-LH2550 monitor with my Mac Pro to view the footage pixel-pixel for serious color grading with Color from FCP Studio.

I am wondering what kind of connection I need to have between the monitor and the Mac. I heard about AJA, but I really don't need any capturing. Is there any another cheaper way (yet still with good color reproduction on the monitor for color grading).

Thanks a lot in advance.

Noah, I've been wanting to find out more about this card, that card that you mention will let you preview for color acurate cc on a sdi monitor? I wonder if it would output to a sdi broadcasr monitor and a hdmi tv for client preview at the same time?

Check the specs- I don't believe the entry level model has both outputs going at the same time.

thanks, NoahK.
I think aalleexx very nicely rephrase my question: I need to preview my footage with accurate color on a reference monitor to do color grading.
Someone told me that a Panasonic BT-LH2550 monitor comes with DVI connector, so I can just plug the monitor directly to the computer and view the footage. But is this method showing the color precise enough to do color grading?
NoahK, if AJA is the choice, what model you would suggest? Really, at this moment, I am just thinking to view the footage with color accuracy, but I wonder if any AJA card can help FCP to accelerate real time effect.
Thanks million.

AJA Kona 3 and HD-SDI Dual to the Monitor. Do not use DVI

Thanks, DJDecay, I know Kona 3, but I am not sure HD-SDI Dual. Is HD-SDI Dual another device or a sub model of Kona 3. Sorry about that I'm really not familiar with it.

In fact, I just checked AJA webpage. I realize that they have three models of Kona, like Kona LHe and LHi.

My purpose for now is only to view my footage shot by HVX200, which is DVCPRO HD format, on a Panasonic 2550 monitor for color grading, so I just ask for accurate color. That's it. I don't capture or doing anything fancy. Will Kona 3 overkill? Can I just get a lower model, even LHe?

Any experience to share, please?

Thanks a lot.

Kona 3 (non-light/Le/PCI-X) has two HD-SDI outputs, and two HD-SDI inputs, you can run them in parallel, say to a CRT Monitor and an LCD or Projector, and it will down res it in realtime. Or you can join both of them to do DUAL HD-SDI for higher bandwidth.

The lower end LE/LHE Kona boards are somewhat of a trade-off, spend the $2,500.

Also don't forget your AES/EBU output monitoring will be provided by the Kona 3 board. - The only thing I don't like about the damn card is the mini sized SDI connectors and breakout cables, other than that it's the golden standard.

Yeah to clarify- DVI is RGB- that's not accurate for color grading. HDMI and SDI are YUV- that's exactly what you want for color grading. SDI is arguably more accurate or at least more commonly used as a universal professional standard.
