Congratulations to the 2012 Oscar nominees for Best Achievement in Cinematography.

Daniel, thank you for your comment.
What I mean, is that from the stand point of building the drama, the characters of the animals, the ocean, the mammals, fish, creatures, the sunsets, a lot, probably 90% of what creates emotional sense, a response from the audience, created from inside the computer, "the best looking tiger" screams "animated", unreal. Not the fact that Claudio was shooting the boat inside the pool. Not the process but the implications, very similar to animation.
The mood of the tiger, as one of the main actors, is established not by DP, but visual artists, probably several dozen persons worked on lighting, skin, facial expressions, etc, the human actors, yes, but think of if you take away all the animated stuff, what will be left in film?

I thought Lincoln should have won. The use of light, shadows, silhouettes..... fantastic. Life of Pi was beautiful, but very CGI, always bright, not much use of light to tell the story IMO.

Yeah I see what your getting at, but for me the real emotion came from old Pi and teenage Pi on the boat, but that's just me.
If you took away all the animated stuff you would still have a more coherent film then if you took away all the live action stuff.

Daniel, I see your point, agree with you, there would be no movie without older Pi, the dancing girl, live action,
but if you take away all CGI, animation... you'd take away all the hype around "the best looking tiger in films so far on beautiful sunset scene", I'd prefer no hype, having more reality in this film, something looking maybe like "Lost", possibly having no tiger at all, as opposed to polished fantasy, commercial look, which I think audience, majority went for. Actualy fake tiger, flying birds, all underwater stuff hurts deeper understanding of the story, rather helping it.
Animated stuff makes imagery stick harder to viewer attention, memory, via manipulation.
possibly produces thought they can sell more tickets that way, Claudio and Ang went along. That's pure speculation on my part.
