Wow, I got my copy of Milimeter magazine today and low and behold, I find the DVX movie, made by DVXUSER's own OWEN, The Sugar Creek Gang, Episode Two, The Great Canoe Fish, is featured prominently in a special advertising insert for Disk Makers DVD replication services. This DVX movie is also, featured on the home page of their website.

Congratulations to Owen. I hope you sell a zillion copies.

David -- thanks for the heads up (and the link to the free subscription).

When I first contacted DiscMakers I tried to track down samples of the movies featured in their catalog so I could judge the manufacturing quality... but I never did find anything. Maybe I will be a bit easier for people to track down than the previous featured DVDs were.

I'm actually surprised they wanted to use my movie -- I figured they'd prefer to use something from their own art department.

Regardless, nice to know the ad is out there! My partner is headed to AFM so I told her to be on the lookout for copies of Millimeter. :)

Owen what was the process? Did you author the DVD? If yes, what app did you use?

Did you do the graphic design?

Holy crap! The Loganville Post says it's "Quality Family Entertainment"! All I got to say is....."Where's Loganville?"! Do the Maxi Shuffle!

oh ... my ... word. That is truly hilarious. but isn't it the Maxi Swing?

My twisted side thought "heh heh -- I'll put the Loganville quote right up there with the AJC quote and people will be thinking 'where's Loganville' and not realizing how positively irritating those words truly are." And then you get on here and quip "where's Loganville?!" A phrase I never thought I'd see printed on an internet forum. Thankfully, I haven't seen that ad in a long long time.

For better or for worse, I authored the discs in Adobe Encore. My main gripe is that the software STILL doesn't support subtitles (without the use of third party software and a complex process). I want my films subtitled for the deaf/hard of hearing, but after you input more than about 15 minutes worth of titles Encore crashes, corrupts your project, and refuses to play nicely. But hey, for $150 off ebay it was the best deal going at the time.

Compression was done with Cinema Craft Encoder Basic before importing assets into Encore. This let me get very specific with bitrates on the feature vs. bonus material vs. trailers etc. so that I could squeeze every byte of space out of a DVD-5. For a $60 encoder I'm pleased with the result.

I do all of my own graphic design in Photoshop & Illustrator. The cover DiscMakers chose to use isn't even the one I'm proudest of, but I only had my first two titles replicated there. They picked the simplest one of all (it consists of a single photograph).

I've been able to experiment with on-disc art along the way too. For the third and fourth films I did offset print jobs for the discs and it's pretty cool (though slightly more expensive to print). All the others (including the one in the DiscMakers ad) are simple 2 color screen prints.

That said, if anybody needs advice on replication facilities (I've dealt with about five different ones so far throughout the US) or print houses feel free to drop me an e-mail.

Discmakers is a pretty good replicator. That's cool about being featured, they also used one of my dvd's about a year ago in their print catalog.

Well, the real tragedy is not being able to hear the accent from printed words. I take that back.....the real tragedy is the number of people who will not get this because they didn't grow up in a place so rich with regionally flavored commercials......ask for the Wolfman.....no......ask for Donna! I'm kinna suprised that Maxi Price hasnt been assassinated. Do you remember TOM STIMUS (bangs the **** out of van hood)?

Don't know about Tom Stimus, though it sounds more tolerable than the others... but I drove by the new Maxi Price Corvette lot every day on my way to the set for these films.

WOW! I've never seen it in real life! Thats like somebody saying they drove by the Hollywood sign everyday! Perhaps I'll take the family for a weekend jaunt to see the Maxi Price carlot, Gallery Furniture (and actually go in and ask for Donna, of course....R.I.P. Wolfman) and Tom Stimus Custom Conversion Vans and see if Tom will slam a hood for me. But trust me....the Stimus commercials are far more irritating than anything Maxi ever did. Tom would just come out real amped up and shouting, every so often slamming his hand on a hood....I mean, he had a real serious pissed off look on his face like he wasnt kiddin at all about wanting to sell something.

This is freakin' awesome! Congrats Owen!

You know Owen, if you keep this up, filmmakers could be like NASCAR drivers and have to wear sponser patches all over their camera vests.
