confused on me66 accessories

When I look at the me66 at B&H, it says they have it for $209 (e-mail me a better price). But when I look at the accessories, it says that a k6 power module is required. If that's the case, then I would need to spend $206 + $299 = $505 to get this mic. Am I correct in my thinking here? Do I need the k6 pwr module also?

TIA,
Chico

Re: confused on me66 accessories

There is a combo deal on B&H that is $565 but when you click on it it goes down to $399.95. That is for the ME66/K6 combo with battery/phantom.

Re: confused on me66 accessories

So you do need both units? The me66 and the k6?

Does anyone know if the Audio Technica 897 needs a separate pwr module also? Or when it says $279, is that the total you will pay to get a functional microphone.

If it is, then I will probably go with the $279 AT897 over the $399 me66+k6.

Thanks again,
Chico

Re: confused on me66 accessories

That is the price for the whole mic as I understand it. That is the beauty of that mic.Great price and great performance. They say it is as good or better that the me66 mic. Let us know what you think. I'vr been looking at that mic also. 8)

Re: confused on me66 accessories

Yes, you need the ME66 AND K6... The ME66 is just the mic element/capsule for the K6

Re: confused on me66 accessories

you could use two seperate shotguns one for each channel, and just aim or position them to pick up the L+R  seperately,, ive normally gone that mthod, and it works well. but never done the single unit route.. it seems as though it would be nice, and easy to get about the same results though.

Re: confused on me66 accessories

I've read many articles on the AT815ST and the AT835ST and they're all very favorable, but I would be more comfortable it someone who actually used either of them were available for comment, so to speak.

I suppose I will be buying the shorter one if I don't hear something contrary in the next couple of weeks.

I've used the Neumann stereo mics... but not the AT's... let me know if you find any good reviews

Re: confused on me66 accessories

I was yesterday at bhphoto asking for the at-897 mic vs the me66, the guy told me that the at-897 doesnt even come near the quality and sensivity of the me66...

dont know what to think.. was he trying to sell the more expensive one or was he telling the truth, what do you guys think? anyone tested it yet?

Re: confused on me66 accessories

Find the specs on both and compare then find some *unbiased* reviews then flip a coin... Better make it the best 2 out of 3 ;).

Sound like a joke, but for certain the reality is close to the same. Unless your brother/sister has owned both and used them in the same types of shots you will be doing, all you can do is gather as much info as you can find in the amount of time you have to give to it, and pick your best guess.

First hand experience is always a winner in my book.

Re: confused on me66 accessories

I am pushing more and more towards getting the AT-897. The thing comes with a windscreen, case, and you don't need a powering device as in the K6 with the ME66.

Re: confused on me66 accessories

Yea, the AT897 seems like a really good choice. Great value! I'm about to order one myself, instead of the me66/k6 kombo i first decided on.

Re: confused on me66 accessories

For the record, I am not usually an advocate for single stereo mics, but I do own a Rode NT4 and get very good results. It is a very fat condenser with two elements placed in an X/Y config. I believe you have to call B&H for the discount, but it is much cheaper than the list price.

B&H salesman don't work on commisions and the more expensive item is not always the more profitable.  I've bought from B&H for years and they've never tried to upsell me.  However, like all of us, they do have opinions.  Extremely variable opinions in my experience.  Although I have the ME66/K6 and like it, why not try the less expensive AT897 and see if it works for you.

One nice advantage of the K6 module is that it can be used with a wide array of capsules.  I have both the ME66 and the ME64 cardioid capsules.  For indoor work in small, reflective rooms, the ME64 sounds noticeably better than the ME66.  The rear lobe of the ME66's pickup pattern can easily pick up reflected sound off a ceiling or wall and add unwanted reverb to a recording.  The ME64 attenuates the reverb nicely.  Outdoors, the ME66 is superior for its off-axis rejection of noise.

Re: confused on me66 accessories

You are right about the ME66 in reflective rooms. The other day, I had to switch to a wireless lav (my only other choice) because the reverb was very hot. I'll be looking into the 64, since I already have the K6.

Re: confused on me66 accessories

Yeah, I'm not sure why the ME66/K6 is recommended so much, For typical indie film/doc work which is often shot in small reflective interior spaces, the ME64/K6 is the better choice. If I had to live with one mic for everything--it would be the ME64/K6 (at that price point).
