Conforming Footage from 60p to 30p in AE

I'm trying to experiment a bit with slow motion with my new T2i.

If I shoot at 720/60p, and then open in After Effects. I think I am supposed to go to interpret footage, and set the frame rate to 29.97 to get smooth slow motion. Then I have to render it out. My question is this, when you use this method, does it simply change the frame rate, and play back the file at half speed, or does it render new frames and such?

I tried searching, but I don't know if I am searching the correct terms and such, as I am very new to AE.

Currently I am using FCE and CS4, and I am just trying to figure out the best way to experiment with Slow-Motion without purchasing anything else.

Yes, that method would just slow down playback (ie. same number of original frames, played at 29.97 , so duration would be 2x as long)

You should be able to do that in FCE as well (AE shouldn't be required for that method)

The other methods that generate new frames permit "slower" slo mo . This means either generating new frames from blending, duplicating frames, or motion interpolation of new frames (eg. pixel motion, twixtor, timewarp). Those are the 3 basic approaches to generating new frames, and they all have undesireable "side effects" (shooting a higher FPS to generate real frames is perferable)

Have a look at videocopilot basic training, Andrew Kramer explains a few of the methods , i think it's the time remapping one:

Thank you for confirming for me. Time to go do some testing now, to see how things look with different shutter speeds.
