conflict during trim operation

Hi all,

I just purchased a Panasonic HMC40 camera and am doing a little testing with footage in FCE. When I highlight a video clip in the timeline and hit a 'command J' to reduce the speed to anything less than 100% I'm getting an error message that says 'Unable to complete command. A conflict occurred during a trim operation'. When I have done this same reduction of speed operation in the past with my Sony TRV310 footage, there were no problems and I was able to reduce the speed to any percent I wanted.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

I'm not certain of an answer, I'm just throwing ideas out there:

First, have you transcoded the clips yet? AVCHD does not work well in FCP, it needs to be transcoded first to work properly. It may play in FCExpress, but needs to be in a codec FCExpress likes in order to do effects.

And btw, thanks I didn't know that shortcut!

Sometimes I get this error in FCP when I am trying to reduce the speed of a clip in the middle of the timeline, this often happens when there are edits that come later in the timeline that already have dissolves added to them. Since reducing the speed changes the length of the clip it will effect everything that comes after that clip, meaning that the speed change would interfere with the dissolve that is already in place (that's the conflict the error message refers to). My workaround is to cut and past the clip you want to slowdown to the end of the timeline, slow it down and then put it back in the spot you want it.

Hope that helps.

thanks

thanks

Hi Staven,

Thanks for the input. I am pretty new to video editing in FCE so am not sure of all the technical protocol yet.

Let me ask what you mean by 'transcoded'. I see that if I go to menu-->final cut express-->easy setup I get a window with default settings as in figure 1

The default codec is DV-NTSC as seen in the popup menu in figure 2

which of the above codecs would you recommend for footage from the HMC40?

I am using the 'log and import' option for importing footage directly into projects from the SDHC card. Does the check box option under the 'import settings' tab mean that audio/video will be transcoded with the import codec specified during 'easy setup'?

Thanks very much for your generous advice. Much appreciated.

ctb1010,

Bingo! That was exactly what was happening. Thanks so much for the tip. :dankk2:
I wonder if there are any optional workarounds for that.
