I've been doing some videography work on the side. Some clients want me to sign a
Confidentiality or NDA Agreement. Do you charge to sign such things? If so, how much is appropriate? I imagine yes since I can't use it on my reel to get more gigs.
I have never charged for signing an NDA, nor do I know of anyone who does.
I suppose if you knew beforehand then you could have upped your rate for the job - though in all honestly that seems odd to me.
Are you certain that you won't be able to use any part of the work on your reel?
Most of the time when I've signed NDAs with clients it has been to cover things I might see/hear while in their offices. The few times it covered the video itself it wasn't a big deal to me because if generally meant the video itself was for internal use only (for example, research and development videos, etc). Those sorts of videos weren't the kind of thing I'd want on my reel anyhow because the client is generally concerned more with the information than the presentation - so production values were always secondary.
My point is - have you clarified with the client what is covered by the NDA? And what are you and are not allowed to use after the fact for self-promotion?
As far as charging extra for the NDA, I wouldn't suggest it.
On the flip side, would you cut someone a deal if they told you that they'd let you put it on your reel?
I've never charged, and probably wouldn't charge for signing an NDA agreement.
As Luis stated- NDA's usually are meant to cover conversations in the office, behind the scenes, and possibly the content of what is shot.
Are you sure you can't put the content on your reel? In some of these situations, you might have to wait around 6 months or so, depending on the project. I would ask your clients about it.
A high-end wedding videographer I have worked for has successfully charged clients a $500 "privacy fee" to keep their wedding teaser/trailer off his blog. Charging the fee sounds like a no-brainer to me, because the ability to showcase your work certainly has a value.
I'm not sure Average Joe could get away with that though.
I thought NDAs also covered being able to show the video on my reel as well, basically don’t talk about it ever or with video, don't broadcast to the world that you've worked on such things.
To clarify, some clients want me to make a contract with them. I have a clause called "Limited License" that will allow me to show the video on my site/reel. Some are okay with it and some are not and don’t want it shown anywhere. I get people asking if I’ve done such stuff as shoot high-end fashion to weddings, etc. If I can’t show them, how can I prove that I’ve done such jobs? I agree with Drew. There is value. If I can showcase my work, I definitely will lose out on future gigs.
