Not trying to ask for too much here. But, with all the CPU threads popping up in Off-Topic I think it's a good idea.

Not only that, with the massive shift to IT workflows (<33 HVX200), the computer is definitely a more major player in our entire process than before.

I'd think it'd be all about computing and software. Like anti-virus, partitioning software. Operating Systems (considering now we have XP, leapord coming, Vista 32 and 64 bit), etc etc.

And of course, custom computer builds and logs.

Anyone think this is actually worth adding? Sorry, mods, if I'm asking for a mile over my already given inch!

yes. all the computer geeks need to be exiled so they can discuss nerdly things amongst themselves.

Reading the posts regarding building systems has inspired me to build one that suits my needs, rather than purchasing a ready-made one with limitations.

Would love a forum on computer systems. Let's face it - we all need a computer to edit on...

Typically, I'd vote for this, but since my own forum has such a section, and I'm struggling to get more than my current 38 members... I'm gonna have to say no, and tell everyone to go there instead... Not going to push my luck by posting a link, but my site isn't hard to find...

Good idea. I'm thinking that the integration into the batch of different facets keeps all the water in one pool, so to speak.

All of the information. It's cool if ya got another forum, you can share that same knowledge here where people visit often, yes?

I'm gonna have to go against the grain and vote "no". There's just entirely too much "computer info" to be summed up in a subforum of a supposed filmmaking forum.

I love my computers, but I don't think that just because we use them to edit footage that there should be a dedicated section in DVXuser. Yes, they'll play a much bigger role in the future of filmmaking, but why not (like Tony Lovasco said), just send people to an entirely seperate forum dedicated to computers alone. I mean, the NLE sections cover a lot of the "computing" aspects of filmmaking. Anything more (in my opinion) belongs in a computeruser.com forum ;)

Just my take...

p.s. I did vote for the 35mm adapter forum, though:huh:

Yeah, i suppose you're right about that. There are HARDWARE sub-forums under the cameras sections already. Maybe the computing buzz can go there? Or just remain posted in off-topics for advice.

It's not a bad idea but I am kind of feeling rcbrown on this. Plus, a lot of computer queries, etc. are going to be specific to certain cameras, and certain NLE's. You need a whole different beast to edit with Vegas/Raylight than you do to edit with EDIUS on the HVX. Well, not a whole different beast, but you get the point. Plus, the computer stuff mostly seems to be something people will start their own thread regardless, b/c they will feel their situation is unique... I don't know. My 2 cents.

I suppose it all boils down to HOW it is implemented in a sub forum. One of my issues with the organisation of this forum, is that every camera has a sub forum. When reading the list of recent threads, you see a topic that could be for any camera. I have to open it to find out it has no value to me.

I'm thinking it could come in handy, but there are other sites that are dedicated to computors. Somebody recommended Majorgeeks.com, which has been about useless for me. It doesn't do much good to post a problem if you can't get an answer. I don't know about the rest of you, but I need my PC for work too, not just play. I can't wait 2-3 weeks for an answer.

ON THE OTHER HAND... if it is kept strictly to video cards, raid configs, capture cards, etc., it might be handy.

I don't see why not. Computer questions could fit within Hardware, but sometimes it's not related to the camera. Could be useful for hardware conflicts or general help, etc. That and the fact that most of the people here are knowledgeable and generally more willing to help a fellow DVX user than if the person were to go and post a question on another forum.

That's the thing. About 1/10 threads (exaggeration) in the Cafe are about computers and I think it'd be cool if those would all go in the same sub-thread. It could be "video-related computing issues" the same way the Photoshop sub-forum is for supposed to be video related.

I voted against because it seems like the vast majority of computer chatter is related to something already up. For example, if I'm interested in something hardware specific to Vegas, I go to the Vegas section, for Photoshop to that one, etc. If it's more general, the hardware section under DVX seems to work and, as pointed out, the cafe is a good catch all.

Or am I missing something in what a computer-specific section would bring?
