Computer Shuts Down When I Try To Capture With Blue Screen (About to flip!)

I have Vegas 10 platinum and a DVX100b. Everytime I hit the capture video button on my laptop to import video from my camera, the web camera on my computer automatically comes on and I get this screeching noise that gets louder, and louder and louder.

While it'is doing this, my computer completely locks up and won't let me stop the tape or do any other functions at all. This has caused the blue screen on my computer to come up three or four times now and I think it is damaging my computer!

Can someone please help me with this, before I go ape ****?

I'd start by disabling the web cam software from popping up and taking control of the camera. Then i'd un-install, and then re-install the drivers for the camera - they should be windows generic, but maybe some proprietary 3rd party drivers were installed instead. also, you might have a deeper problem with your OS, especially if it becomes unstable during a simple video capture. Vegas is sensitive to corrupt windows system files and viruses, especially any win32 Trojans that hook onto executables so if you haven't done already, get AVG or any legit anti-virus and run a virus scan.

what version windows are you running?
what are your hardware specs?

Intel core 2 duo CPU T6400 @2.00GHz 2.00GHz 3.0 GB Ram 32bit operating system. Windows Vista Home Preminum.

I'm 99% sure it's not my computeror a virus. When I say the blue screen comes up, I mean that the screeching caused from the feedback of the webcam goes on for so long and gets so high. The blue screen comes up saying something it's trying to protect my computer.

I already disabled the webcam in the device manager. Is there a preset in Vegas where the web cam would come on automaticlly? I'm looking, but I can't find anything like that.

i suspect the screeching is feedback - both recording and playing back the background noise in an infinite increasing loop?

Anyway, from inside Vegas's Video capture function, you should be able to select which camera you want to use - sounds like it's defaulting to the web cam, possibly because it can't see the DVX? Make sure the DVX is connected and on, and the web cam is physically disconnected (unless it's one of those laptop built-in ones, of course).

Mute your speakers in case the webcam comes on, vegas will default to capture from your built-in webcam if another device isn't found to be connected and the sound you're hearing is indeed infinite loop feedback.
