I have vegas 5, learning after effects and do photoshop. My early gen lcd monitors are getting very tried. Im looking for any suggestions lcd or crt? If so which models, I really dont know how to tell good lcd from bad like crts by reading specs. Any ideas would be great :)

Re: computer monitor suggestions

honestly, I don't know much about this either. CRT's are cheaper, but you need to calibrate them reguarly and eventually the phosphors will die a slow death, reducing the color capabilities of the monitor.

LCD's are more expensive, but are light weight and more reliable for calibrating.

I'd be interested to hear ideas on specific brands as well.

Re: computer monitor suggestions

Ive had a 19" monitor for a while - Trinitron Tube based. But man since I switched to a 19" BenQ LCD monitor I have never looked back. It has a very fast refresh rate and the contrast ratio is excellent. It uses less power than CRTs, lighter, saves space and looks better. Not to mention the clarity. LCD is the way of the future.

Re: computer monitor suggestions

THats interesting because I heard the benq are rotten for video too slow of a refresh rate.

Neither CRT nors LCDs are "good" for editing video...but CRTs are less "bad".

Personal pref here, but I detest LCDs for anything. Don't like the look at all.

I have a Sony 23" Widescreen LCD and think it's terrific. Beautifull picture and lots of screen space.

Is it too much to ask for straight answers ?

Re: computer monitor suggestions

Personally, for any kind of color critical work, CRT's are ideal, however, LCD's are beautiful and save a lot of space. I personally use two 19" flat screen CRT's for all of my photoshop and NLE work. But for true NTSC color correction nothing is better than an NTSC monitor for you NLE proofing. So for video editing, I would say it doesn't matter what kind of monitors you have, as long as you are proofing on an NTSC monitor for critical color correction. However, for print work and if you wanted to blow up to film (I know that's what everybody does on this site) then a CRT will give you the most color accurate rendition, as long as it is calibrated. I calibrate my monitors once a week, probably should do it more often, but havn't had any problems so far.

Re: computer monitor suggestions

There are various ways to calibrate your monitor, whether it be a CRT or LCD, the process is the same. If you have photoshop, it comes with it's own calibration software, however it is not very accurate, as you basically calibrate it by eye. If you want a better calibration, you can buy a little sensor that will sit on your screen and run a pass of colors under it, then setting the calibration for your monitor. There are different brands of these, one of the most popular being the "spider", which I use also. It can be used both on LCD's and CRT's and does a really good job. A little while back it was bundled with the Adobe CS upgrade for $249, a great deal. You can find the spider as low as $149 by itself, but it does have higher priced and more accurate versions available as well.

I use a NB with an extra 19" Viewsonic CRT, and I couldn't ask for anything better. I agree that color depth and richness looks better on CRT's, so I just keep all composites/previews over there... but yeah, if you're shopping for a fresh set of dualies, Viewsonics are the cream of the crop.

Samsung SyncMaster series. Most bang for the buck. The 955DF is the best monitor I've ever owned.
