Computer freezes when capturing

My computer freezes during capture. I am using premiere pro 1.5 on a Toshiba P35-S6053(3.45GHz intel processor). I am using an adaptec Fire Connect card that is IEEE 1394/Firewire. I am capturing to a G-Raid 320 Gig hard external hard drive.

When I try to capture the whole tape or a batch capture, it will capture for a while then the omputer just freezes up. I have to do a hard re-boot just to use the computer. The tape in the camera continues playing.

I've reloaded AP1.5 as well. Anyone have any suggestions? All are appreciated!

I see this has been sitting quite a while and no one's taken a swing at it so I'll try a guess. The first place I'd be suspicious of is the external hard drive. Most hard drives give inflated transfer speed specs. The more honest ones will list "burst" and "sustained" transfer rates. Hard drives use internal memory "buffers" to capture and hold info until it can be physically written. It's a dynamic in-out process, very similar to a hydraulic accumulator used to maintain pressure in a liquid system. Streaming video is a very high bit rate process - filling the HD's buffers is going to generate a "drive not ready" type message to the operating system which may not be handled very well by the running program.

Things to try would start with faster hard disk, timing process from init to failure (hard drive activity light stops blinking), doing your xfers in chunks that don't exceed that time, etc.

Strictly a guess, but where I'd start.

Good luck.

Heres my crack at it too...still on the transfer rates....

Question tho...is it a USB external HDD? Or a firewire? If its a USB then that might be your problem. The data transfer rate on USB is substantially low compared to a firewire 400/800. Your camera is capturing faster than it can save to the HDD.

Try and capture locally first then transfer to the external and see if that solves the problem.

I definately dont think its a software problem. And your processor is fast enough to process the data transfer.
