computer freezes during MPEG-2 compression

When using Compressor or Quicktime Conversion in FCP 4.5 computer almost always freezes. Have a G5 Dual 2.0 which is running Tiger OS. Graphics card is ATI Radeon 9600 Pro, which is an AGP card with 64MB. All the project files and movie clips are contained on an external 250 GB Lacie firewire drive. Please help!!!!

we haven't started using tiger yet b/c of possible bugs, and this is one i heard of from a friend, but he said Apple released a fix for it, are all your updates ...uhm up to date?

I've upgraded to the latest version of Tiger, which I believe is 10.4.1.

My firewire drive has been partitioned, is that a no-no.

shouldn't be, do you have the latest fcp upgrade?

No expet, but have heard of problems with external drives.

I'd repair permissions on the system drive...

Try targeting the system drive for the saved compression file...

Trash the compressor preferences...

Try creating a new user and running compressor...

I haven't had any problems with compressor 1 and FCP 4.5 or QT 7 since going to Tiger.
