I don't have strong feelings on the Zoom one way or the other....unless you are talking about favorite childhood program.

Are you talking about a bag mixer? That is a totally different topic then a computer interface box.
I'm not sure what it is. All I know is that it's portable and they use it on set.

Could be a million things you saw; some sort of mixer or mixer/recorder combo. Really depends on the format and what the producer wants. Mixer could have been a Sound Devices, a Wendt, a Shure, a SQN, or even a Cooper. Recorder could have been a Sound Devices, Cantar, HHB, DEVA (not likely), or Nagra (less likely).

Boom op having the mixer/recorder is for ENG work. I would assume the discussion here is for a narrative or some sort of non-bag work.

Cheers

This is going off topic but what are the essentials for recording dialogue? If it's an interior then I'm sure there's an unlimited number of devices you can use. But what about shots in the middle of a field or somewhere with no power?

I'm curious...I had a Sound Devices 702 last summer which I barely used except to test it and I recall using my Oktava I had at the time. It sounded quite good. Excellent actually. Can I expect a similar quality of sound from say a presonus firebox?

I bought a firebox to monitor audio out of final cut pro when my mbox was giving me problems. I couldn't get rid of the pops and clicks with the firebox, so I returned it. Luckily digidesign came out with pro tools le 7.3 about the smae time as well as an mbox firmware update, so I am back online without problems. (fcp 5.1.4 mac pro 2gb mbox ptle7.3.1 w/cs2 patch)

As I mentioned before, my firepox has been very solid for doing all audio I/O on my editing workstation (PC). There are certain motherboard chipsets and firewire controllers that Presonus documents as being problematic.

I don't have a SD702 to compare to but given that both products are made by good companies, I would expect that you tend to get what you pay for. Functionality-wise it's not an apple-to-apples comparison but I would not expect the preamps and converters on the Firebox to match a device that's 5 or 6 times it's price.

I have an Maudio Fastrack Pro, available at any Guitar Center. It has great preamps and I have made some excellent recordings with it.

I wonder though because while the 702 was a great piece of solidly made gear, I felt the price was hugely bloated. Now with the firebox, they don't have to charge as much because first of all it doesn't have to be reay for the field in the same way the 702 does and second it's more of a mass consumer item. I wish I were able to compare the 702 with the oktava with the firebox and a Schoeps CMC.
