Ok, I have the prog, compressor that goes along with the FCP prog, but for some reason it wont open, and wont show up as an export option in FCP. I figured maybe it was just something with the program file. I asked my friend for his version of compressor........and yet again, IT STILL DOSENT WORK!!!!! - anybody? help please....

Do a permissions repair and searc for compressor prefs file and delete it.

If that doesn't work try re-installing it from the DVD sicne there are other fiels that get installed. There's QMAster (?) which is used for backgroudn rendering.

I tried that, no results. I unfortunately dont have the DVD to re-install, but I looked through my application enhancers and I do have all of the compressors codecs stored, I wonder if there is some way I can use the codec w/o going through compressor

Anything will help

Again, nothing, Im ready to delet everything on my computer and start over re-installing, but unfortunately, i will lose alot of progs that way

Here's the deal--

When you buy FCP and DVDSP to install on your system, for some boneheaded reason Compressor is on BOTH install disks. It screws things up royally. If you are getting the dialog box that says "Unable to connect to background process," then this is the problem.

There are literally dozens of hacks to fix this, and I tried most if not all of them, including the dicey Terminal hacks. After several Apple service call conversations, I finally got the matter resolved. Here is what you do:

1. Completely uninstall FCP and DVDSP. Use the instructions from Apple's support site to help you find all of the hidden preference files and whatnot. Then repair permissions.

2. Reinstall FCP, but do so as a CUSTOM install, not a full or "easy" install. Make sure you DO NOT SELECT COMPRESSOR for installation! When you are done, you'll have a working version of FCP with NO COMPRESSOR. Again, repair permissions.

3. Use Software Update to get FCP up to the latest build--still NO COMPRESSOR. Repair permissions.

4. Do a FULL install of DVDSP and follow up with another trip to Software Update. Compressor will be properly installed from the DVDSP disk. Repair permissions one last time.

When you are done, you'll have a fully functional FCP/DVDSP set up in which hand-offs between them to Compressor will work just fine. This is the only way I have been able to use Compressor on my 15" Al PBook. For some reason my G4 tower never developed the glitch, but my laptop sure did, and it made for weeks of hair-pulling frustration until I resolved it.

I hope I have spared you that.
