Compressor ridiculously slow?

Is it normal for a 3 min HDV short to take up to 9 hours for 90 DVD Best quality and 3 hours for H2.64 to encode in Compressor?

My comps specs are Mac Pro 2.66 quad core w/ 3 gigs ram and 7600 GT

My scratch disc is on an external HD connected via FW800.

I'm using Compressor 2.0 btw with FCP 5.2.1. I can't seem to find a reason why it's taking so long. Any ideas? Thanks.
 
wow, such an old post i'm responding too.

I'm working with compressor 3, and mbpro 2.2 with 4gb ram. I'm converting about 500 gigs of dv footage to quicktime and it's taking me forever.

In my system pref. I upped the instances to two, and its working slightly faster but still very slow.

Any insight anyone?

My experience on admittedly not state of the art hardware is that compressor is HORRIFICALLY slow :( almost to the point of being unusable in my view
