Compressor problem

Robbie Comeau

Como's back. back again
I have FCP studio 2, but i dont have enough RAM to use it. So i am back to the good old final cut 5.1. I have the suite. Now, compressor got all messed up, and would freeze when i would send my project over there, and FCP would crash.

When i double click my final cut .dmg file to reinstall it, i get this:

What the hell? I can get it enabled, but when i do, it's only an update.
Why cant i install compressor?

thanks

So im in the 5.1 dmg file. And when i try to get compressor (after deleting it completey off my computer by grabbing the APP and putting it in the trash) i upgrade compressor (only option) when its done, i see a little compressor icon in my apps. I double cick it opens in my dock, then dissapears. It continously does this!

This could be related to upgrading Quicktime. What version do you have? There's a bug that Apple seems to be unable to reproduce where Quicktime 7.2 breaks compressor. I think this is fixed in the version of compressor you can't install, though. Weak!

Well, it won't hurt any to completely uninstall everything, since you're already there. Do you happen to have something like AppTrap? It'll ensure that when you delete the stuff Apple tells you to, all related files will go bye-bye. Really handy. Some people are saying that they fixed compressor just by reinstalling, so I'd definitely give it a try; if that doesn't work, might want to check out your options for going back from 7.2.

Chances are when you dragged the app to the trash, it didn't include everything. You need to make sure it's all gone with a third party app like AppTrap.

One of the only things I don't like about Macs is that they don't allow a complete uninstall from a disk utility.

Hmmm, I think I wound up reinstalling the whole Studio. Download what, Quicktime? I don't think you can move backwards easily, but I'm sure one of us will find something that works soon... my compressor just died too. F!

Ok so i deleted compressor with the Apptrapp aplication and it worked. I installed it at 82 mb's, then tried to open it. Didnt work. Is it quicktime 7.2 ruining it for me? How do i fix this? I dont wanan delete quicktime

When you deleted, do you know if ~/Library/Application Support/Compressor/ was left around? I had to delete mine by hand, so you might want to re-delete and then squash that directory too. If that isn't it, I'd really point the blame at QT 7.2

Alright now im fed up. I comepletely deleted Compressor. And im trying to install quicktime 7.16 or w.e, off creative cow .net. I cant because it says i have a newer version in stalled on my mac. Ok, reasonable. I go to delete my new quicktime, and all of its components, and it says "ugh im stupid, cant delete quicktime becasue Motion is in use" or some stupid stuff lie kthat. Motion isnt even running.

How can i delete quicktime 7.2, to install the old version?

It wont let me delete that. And everything on QT7.3 is deleted, except for that. And when i try to install the old quicktime, so i can get Compressor to work, well it says i have a newer version. WTH!

Yeah... last time I had the 7.2 issue, I wound up reformatting. Going backwards is always a huge hassle. Are you going to be getting memory to run FCS2?
