Oh **** indeed.

FCS2 on a new iMac 24", dual 2.8, 4GB RAM, OSX 10.4.11

Compressor at first wouldn't open - I've already forgoten what I did to fix that, but now it opens. However, now it will not submit a batch no matter what I do. It's gng me the "Restard to check proper installation" message, regardless of how many times I've restarted and shut down/started the computer since I installed it.

I've done everything short of reinstall it and Qmaster (whick I will do this weekend), but faialing that, is there any option other than a full rebuilt from operating system up?

Not. Happy.

Tedious and very much no fun at all, but it may work. You can manually remove every file associated with Final Cut Studio from your machine by looking at the install log in the installer program and seeing what it puts and where and removing every last skerrick of it. A re-install after that should fix it, I fixed similar problems with my FCS2 by doing this.

To see the list of files installed, run the installer and from the drop down menu bar select File>Show Files. It will give you a list of everything. It takes a while, but after upgrading from FCP5 to FCS2 I suffered innumerable problems until I did this and it saved me a full re-install of the OS. AppZapper the supposed uninstall app was unable to do a job as good.
