Compressor kinda sucks?

uuh ... yeah, there are better ones out there but Cleaner definitely is not one of them. It depends what you want to do, if you want to encode for internet, Sorensen Squeeze http://www.sorensonmedia.com/ or Popwire Compression Master http://www.popwire.com/ are very good programs. If you want mpg compression for DVDs Mainconcept [http://mainconcept.de] or BitVice http://www.innobits.se/ are good.
I personally like Compressor quite a lot, the mpgs leave something to wish for and some advanced options like those found in Canopus ProCoder (for Windows) would be nice but it seems like Compressor 2 will deliver some of those. But whatever you do, I would never recommend to spend a dime on Cleaner since I found it to be little more than a sophisticated generator for error messages.

i use cleaner for encoding for internet. It works quite well. Way better than trying to use final cut exporting methods for internet clips. Sorenson squeeze is also a highly recommended program for internet friendly encoding. As for what moebius said regarding error messages... i have a downloaded version of cleaner and i get those messages everytime I go to encode. Thing is, as soon as i close the error message the program keeps working and does what I ask it to do.

As for compressor. Sure it doesn't encode as well as say a pro hardware based mpeg encoder, but for a cheap software based program I find it pretty good. The key for using it to it's fullest is to use A.Pack that comes with Dvd Studio Pro to encode an .AC3 file for your audio. PCM audio does not compress your audio at all really. It takes up so much space on your dvd. But using A.Pack along with Compressor you can export high quality MPEG's for video, then encode your PCM audio in A.Pack making it an AC3 file and fit a whole bunch of stuff on your single layer 4.7 g dvd.

Two things to look into:

Surprisingly, we've been getting rather nice results in MPEG4 recently with QuickTime 7. Frankly, I was amazed.

Compressor2 will include AC3 as an audio option, streamlining that part of the workflow, as well as H.264 for all kinds of opportunities...
