I have no idea how to use Compressor properly. Can anyone give me exact instructions on what to do to use it to it's full capacity. I want to know what to do for 1/ Uploading onto the web. 2/ Putting onto a DVD(idvd). Thanks.

What is it for? To compress video for output to DVD? I haven't used it yet but I have just burned my dvd's right in idvd3. What does Compressor do that I cannot do in idvd3?

Compressor is just what it says: a compressor. It gives you the option of exporting your video in a multiplicity of formats, in whatever size (frame size), with whatever quality you want.

Yes, iDVD will do compression for you to put your movie onto a DVD, but if you have a super-huge piece, it may be that iDVD wouldn't be able to compress it enough, whereas Compressor may. Other than that, if you're just burning DVD's, then yes, iDVD will suffice.

As far as how to use it, check the manual. It has a step-by-step process for pulling in a file, and getting it out. I think basic steps from FCP are:

- export 'Using Compressor' / Compressor should open on its own and list your movie file.
- choose a preset from the drop-down box / you can also click the presets icon and make your own.
- choose a destination / I always just choose 'Desktop' so my movie shows up there.
- name your file whatever you want.
- click submit.

It should then say 'submitting batch' and then a new window should pop-up (Batch Monitor) with your file name and a 'Processing' progress bar. When it's done, your file will be wherever you chose in the destination step.

After that it's just a matter of checking quality, filesize, framesize, etc. and deciding if you like that compression setting or not. If not, just go back into the presets and make your own. I think my explanation helps remove me from the generic trying-to-tell-you-to-rtfm category, but really you should read the manual. It has simple to follow steps to everything you want to do. It's a very powerful tool.

Hope this helps,
Chico

Compressor really does a good job compressing the MPEG files for dvd... Granted if it's just one-off quicky dvd's, I'll just do it in iDVD, but for client and important projects, definitely use Compressor and Studio Pro. Compressor uses a 2-pass VBR encoding scheme that really gives you a much better quality.

Alot of times when I watch peoples Little flicks on here, I see that they crop the image for quicktime playback. How do they do it so we don't see the letterbox?
