Compressor 2 Unusable...

I really don't know what to make of this but I've never been able to get a good DVD using Compressor 2. Anytime I use compressor 2 for large projects (60-80 min) My DVDs are riddled with dropouts, glitches and just don't play in many people's players. I've had issues in the past so for the past year or so I've been exporting all my stuff to DV50 files and sending them to my G4 running the older version of Compressor. While that would take longer, I'd get an encode I can trust.

Not too long ago I did a complete overhaul on my G5 and reinstalled everything. Thinking perhaps my problems would be gone I tried Compressor 2 again. Same problems. What's going on?

I always encode with an average bitrate of 6mbps and max at 8mbps with 192 ac3 audio. Is that too high? I would love to get the speed and ease of my G5 to encode things, but it just never worked for me. I author in DVDSP. I run all the latest versions of everything. G5 2.5DP 4gig ram.

I used to always encode my menus in Compressor 2 regardless and never had a problem though, then again those were all 2 min clips. Now I even noticed my menus glitching... something that's never happened to me.

I would always do the "export to compressor" option from FCP. Would it do anything to export a file from FCP first and drop that into Compressor instead?

This is frustrating. I'm just tired of people complaining that their DVD doesn't work. It really shouldn't be this difficult. I've made DVD's for years now and I haven't had issues untill FCP5 and Compressor 2 came into the mix.
 
How does the file play in DVDSP?what happens when you play the VIDEO_TS file with mac dvd player? do you still get the drop outs etc? maybe its a problem with the burn?
192 is the setting for the 90min best encode preset.

Everything plays fine on the machine, when I go to disc it has issues.
 
do you have toast? have you tried burning a VIDEO_TS file from there instead of burning from DVDSP?

How would that make a difference if I may ask? Also, am I burning right from DVDSP? I always use the "build/format" button, should I simply use "burn" instead?

I would assume you are buring from dvdsp. I would try the "burn" and see what happens. I use that method often and have had no problems. I suggested burning with toast to help trouble shoot where the problem may lie as in it could be a bug with the burn portion of dvdsp thats all.

the problem could also be with the media itself or the burn speed. With toast you will be able to select burn speed so this may help if you burn the disc at a slower rate. just a suggestion. i am no expert but ive burned a lot of dvds with compressor- dvdsp - toast etc with no major hiccups :)

What kind of DVD-Rs are you using? That can be issue. I use Pansonic's and have never had a problem. I also agree that your audio may be a bit to too high.

Your video bitrate is probably ok. However, I have heard that the optimal bit rate for compressor is 5.5 with a max of 7.2.

I burn in DVDSP with the build/format option and have no problems. People do say that using toast is better though.
