How do i get more than a hour of video on a 4.7gb disc and what are the steps have a project coming up i may need 3hrs of space?

If you have Compressor then just use its presets for your necessary lengths. You can get a 2 hour film onto a single layer DVD-R w/ reasonable results. Might have to make a few coasters along the way until you get a feel for tweaked bitrates, but that's about it. I would certainly plan on a VERY limited menu system in this case. Save as many bytes as you can for the m2v file, don't waste them on the menu.

Going up to 3 hours on a single layer DVD-R is going to be rough. Really it won't look very good. But if you simply have to get it done, then again, play with the bit rates (crank them way the hell down) and you should be able to get it to work. I'd really recommend though thinking about going to Dual Layer for that project. You would only need to rent an external burner (or a suite) for like an hour. Do all the prep work at home. Just hit "Build" in DVD Studio Pro. Save the Video/Audio TS folders to an external drive (or internal if you're renting a external burner) and you're good to go.

cheers.

I am having the same problem. I have 90 minutes and can't get it compressed. I exported as a QT Movie then used DVD Pro to compress and burn at the same time. That didn't work. It was too big.
Then we tried FCP to compressor. I haven't had much time to learn compressor, but it says batch incomplete. Whatever that means.
Now we are trying FCP to quicktime conversion. We still don't have the perfect way of compressing and burning. It's quite frustrating.

jakatak,

Apple Pro Training Series: Compressor Quick Reference Guide

Not very expensive, not very big or hard to get through, may very well be worth the purchase for you.

If you have a 90 minute piece, using the Best Quality 90 minute preset in compressor (and use the AC3/Dolby audio, not AIFF) and you should fit that onto a 4.7GB disc quite easily. If you need a lot of heavy menu stuff, then you might need to tweak the preset just slightly to lower the bit rate just a notch or two (to free up some space for the menu layout).

The batch incomplete error could mean a few things (depending upon if you've accidentally added other things or such). If it works successfully you'll have your audio and video compressed files show up in your Destination location (wherever you set it to). If you are having problems getting compressor to work going straight from your editing timeline, you could export a Quicktime Movie from Final Cut Pro (turn on make movie self contained). Then drag that into Compressor. Then try the presets on that and see if you have any better success. Good luck.

cheers.

thanks. we have the apple pro training series for FCP and for DVD Pro Studio (which I just bought yesterday).
I will definitely get this one too.
So the menu takes up lots of space on the DVD, huh? That's nice to know. We will keep the menu as simple as possible.

Well the menu CAN take up a lot of space. It all really depends on you. But I've had a few instances where I've tried to squeeze around 90-100 mins onto a DVD and if I used a menu or one of the templates or such it wouldn't fit. But if I just went like auto play a track I could squeek it in (I could have re-encoded, but that would have taken a long time, and having a menu at all wasn't as important as getting something out fast).

cheers.
