Compression woes...

I'm going insane. Every time I compress I get a different result even when i use the same presets!!!

WTF!!!

I'm getting really chunky blacks and extremely low res using the mpeg4 export.

I've messed around with all the options and still have had nothing useful.

The part that drives me insane is that it is only a 40 second clip!!

Does anyone know of a decent way of getting good results or a free online tutorial that I can take that will help me yield decent results?

Thanks,

The only thing I've encoded MPEG-4 I did with Compressor using the following setting:
MPEG-4 Basic NTSC for Modem Streaming

For the broadband stuff I used MPEG-1 Web

Both of these were in Compressor. I was happy with what it gave me. But I haven't really compressed much for the web, most everything I've done has been MPEG-2.

Unfortunately I have no experience with QT7 for compressing. I'll have to give it a shot when I have some time.

I would use Compressor as well, probably much better than QT7, and it sounds like QT has some issues if that's what happens with the same preset. Probably one of those Apple bugs=)

Newtodvx100a,

That looks ****in' great.

How are you getting these results. Please oh please post your settings.

Great work.

I used Quicktime movie
Compression H.264
Quality : High
Key Frame rate: 24
Frame reordering : Yes
Encoding mode : multi pass

It was shot in 24pa

This is insane. Those are settings I've tried and gotten hideous results. I give up on QT. I'm looking into flash instead.

Maybe I'll do a fresh instal of some of my programs, cause this doesn't makes sense.

Thanks for the help newtodvx100a, I appreciate your time and input.

One last thought. Did you do alot of color correction or digital enhancements? I have noticed the more you change the orginal footage the more artifacts and less pristine the video gets.

Yeah, a ton of CC and a bit of compositing as well, but to tell the truth, those sections compress fairly well.

I'm doing a clean install tonight. My compter is acting kinda wonky and my FCP has gone crazy. All might be solved by tomorrow.

We always use the same settings as newtodvx100a. it works perfectly. Maybe try to trash your prefs and redo permissions on your drives. mpeg4's suck compared to h.264
