Compression settings for DV from a DVX100b

Hi Guys,

I know this must have been asked a thousand times before, but I can't find a thread anywhere which is helping me. Please feel fee just to direct me to any you know of...

I am just looking at some family footage I have from last year which I would like to edit, and, watching it on a 26" LCD TV I am noticing how much noise is in there. It was shot outdoors with plenty of light, in squeeze mode. V detail was set to thin, by the way.

I suspect that it may well just be that I am looking at DV. However, I would love to know what the most suitable settings are when compressing the footage to a Quicktime file (H.264) to be watched on a computer or LCD TV. I'm hoping that I can reduce the noise a little.

Many thanks,

Philip

Noise reduction isn't really a feature of a codec (H264, MPEG2, etc), although some compression suites offer noise reduction regardless.

I believe Compressor offers some form of noise reduction, though I've never used it myself.

And yes, before anyone calls me out on it, I'm well aware that some implementations of codecs, notably H264, do actually have noise reduction (though this is simply through discarding of quantizer data, I believe, not an actual attempt at denoising).

If you're looking for a noiseless clean upconversion to HD you might want to look into a professional for making such a deliverable. Check the links in my signature for samples.
