Redoing website and updating demos.
Web guy wants files to be less than 2 mb.:(
A challenge that poses a problem.
Can offer 1 minute clips, but during disolves (cross fades) getting that watery breakup.
You know,---the kind that sucks unless you're doing a marine something or other.:undecided
Anyway am using Vegas and rendering to QT 7 (Sorenson 3 I beleive).
Anybody have any favourite settings for rendering better looking stuff to put on my portfolio using Vegas and QT?

Wait a minute,---yes.
That's the codec for QT 7, right?
So yes.
All comes down to a matter of compromise.
You want a small file so it downloads quickly.
You want quality that doesn't suck.
I decided on quality just this side of sucking really hard,---while being less than 2 mb.
Need to know more about compression and getting exceptional quality from DV for the web.

QT 7 has a lot of codecs to choose from (h264 being one of the newer ones)
other factors are size you require and the frame rate. Try 1/2 speed or 1/2 size. It may not be as bad as you think.

Also, you can help out that "watery breakup" by inserting more keyframes in the encoding. This usually means lowering the keyframe number in the settings. This will increase the filesize, but not nearly as much as adding more bit rate or something like that. Also, if you want to squeeze every freakin' drop of quality out per level of bit rate, you should be encoding using 2-pass VBR. Finally, one thing to keep in mind about the MPEG4 codecs (H264), is that older players won't be able to play them until the user upgrades.

I had those same questions and a few more to add. What is a good bitrate or frame rate to choose? I chose 23.98 as a frame rate only because that is what I had my sequence in FCP HD set to. As for the bitrate I have been playing around with that.

Now for a video clip to to download quickly or in a decent amount of time and playback with good quality what should I keep the MB's at? I have a project I compressed yesterday 4 different times and changed the settings for each and ended up with 136.5 MB for 24P small progressive; 79.4 MB for Fast Cable Streaming 24P; 68.6 MB 24p Large progressive; and 115.8 MB widescreen 24p progressive. These are all MPEG-4 files using COMPRESSOR.

Is there a MB number that I should stay below or are the examples I posted above ok? This is going to be for the INTERNET by the way. The quality of the 4 above doesn't look bad but I would like to see if I can get it to look just a little bit more cleaner at a decent size. It doesnt have to be full screen but would like it to be a decent viewing size.

thanks!
