compression markers vs chapter markers

I'm trying to use chapter markers created in FCP6 to create scene selections in DVDs that I am burning in Toast 9 as well as iDVD and hopefully DVDSP though I just started using that application. In Toast my chapter markers do not seem to be differentiated from my compression markers, and I'm getting a scene selection based on every marker regardless of whether it's a chapter marker.

Aren't compression markers supposed to be ignored for the purposes of scene selection?

I'm reading the manuals and searching online for tutorials covering this, but I can't seem to get my head around it. I wonder if anybody could just point me to the basic steps I have to take to bring my FCP6 project with compression and chapter markers into either iDVD or DVDSP in such a way that I can have a secondary screen with scene selections based on my chapter markers only.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Chapter Markers in FCP are only useful in DVDSP, which recognizes them, and can automate the creation of chapter menus from them. Make Chapter Markers, Send To Compressor, use one of the DVD preset folders, take that MPEG-2 video and AC3 audio into DVDSP. The metadata from Chapter Markers in FCP is written specifically for DVDSP, it's not a universal thing.

Thanks, Ben B for the prompt reply. I am brand new to Compressor but I will try it. This may be an obvious question, but is there any setting I can look out for so that when I author in DVDSP I can have a scene selection menu screen based on my chapter markers automatically generated with a link to the top menu?

Once you have your audio and video files in DVDSP, via Compressor (make sure they both have the same name), drop one into a Track (both will go, if they have the same name).

Use one of the existing templates, customize it as you wish, save it as your own template.

Then, make your Main menu for the DVD. Make a button for Chapters. Drag the Track to that button, hold, from the overlay menu that appears, you can tell DVDSP to make chapter menus with links. It'll next prompt you for a menu template to use.

it's really that easy.

thanks, Ben! That advice is what I needed to boil it down for me. I still have yet to burn a DVD using Compressor or DVDSP. So I will take it slow and make sure!

BTW, only use Compression marker if you have bad pixelation and artifacts in your final product. Otherwise, don't touch them. FCP/Compressor add them strategically in the background already.

I had been wondering about that! Thanks for clearing it up. The FCP manual is somewhat ambiguous on that point.

Ever crack open the Compressor manual? In fact, the book you need, and it's only about $30 on Amazon, is "Apple Pro Training Series: Compressor 3.5". Lots of good useful info in there.

Being new to DVDSP, I'm trying to figure out how to save a menu template that I created for my chapter index, so that I can then make a main menu for my project with a chapter index button that will link to the chapter index menu. That is, where do I save the chapter index menu TO? I've got my assets on a track and ready to be linked to the menus.

If anybody could sort of walk me through the steps here, I would greatly appreciate it. This is the first time I've tried to burn a DVD in DVDSP. The help here has got me this far, but now I seem to be stuck at this point.

Highlight a menu template, click the Create button below the template list, name it. "Project" makes it available only to that specific DVDSP project. "Self Contained" makes it available to all DVDSP projects. Then customize it as you wish.

Thanks once again, Ben. I'll try that when I get back to my project tonight. One more question that probably has a simple answer, but as I haven't burned any DVDs yet in DVDSP I've been worrying about it: Once you have a couple menu screens (or more) completed, will DVDSP automatically play them in the right order, or do you have to specify the order somewhere?

Um, nothing on a DVD pops up by itself. Not sure what you mean by having them appear in the correct order. You'll have buttons on each menu which will target other menus to navigate to. That's the only order there is.

I'm sitting here stymied again despite reading the DVDSP manual -- I saved my chapter index menu template after customizing it. Now I want to create a main menu screen, but when I click on the main menu screen template, it enters into menu viewer filled with the content I had in the previous chapter index menu -- that is, the stills and and the moving images. How can I get a main menu template that isn't full of the content from the previous menu I created? What I think I'm asking is how do I clear the menu workspace so I can work on a newly selected menu template?

As always, any help appreciated!
