When Im done with a project and I export it to a self contained quicktime file, the resolution seems to go down quite a bit... Should I be exporting with a different compressor or something?
You have no idea if the quality goes down unless you see it on an external broadcast monitor. But no, just saving out as a QT movie will not effect the image quality. You're just seeing the difference between a media player and an NLE.
I'm guessing you're using NTSC DV. If you export and play it in Quicktime by default it'll display it at 50% quality. If you want to see it in full; go to View > Show Movie Properties (CMD+J). In the window that opens, select your video track and go to the Visual Settings tab. At the bottom you will find a check box for "High Quality". This will allow you to view the video in full resolution.
See, this is why I'm so anxious for the QuickTime Quick-Reference Guide to come out next month! I actually do basic edits in QTPlayer. Add sound tracks, music, trim clips, paste clips together, it's amazing how quick and easy you can do some basic stuff without having to launch FCP. And FCP won't let you fool with the metadata of a QT.mov like QTPro Player will.
that high quality tab is absolutely incredible!
i too thought that all of my q.t. files never could look as good as
they do in f.c.p.
amazing!!!!
thanks cools
