Compressing in Sections with Compressor

Blaine

Mr. Hollywood
I'm compressing a 90 minute feature using Compressor 2 for output onto DVD. I was making a "Temp Print" for soundtrack composing using the following settings on my PowerBook G4. MPEG-2, Average Bit Rate 5.0 Mbps, Maximum Bit Rate 7.5 Mbps, Best Motion Estimation, Single Pass. I also put on a Test Overlay Filter in Compressor to act as a watermark.

My problem is that Compressor seems to bomb out somewhere between 60,000 and 90,000 frames. Is this something I should expect due to my computer's limitations? I have 1.5 GB of RAM and the processor runs at 1.67 Ghz. As a work around I have broken the feature into approximately 22-25 minute sections and compressed those, then put them back together on the same timeline in DVD Studio Pro. It seems to work fine but it would sure be nice to compress it in one large chunk.

(Yeah, I know it takes a long time on a PowerBook G4, but I'm not ready to get a G5 Desktop just yet.)

Oh yeah, my files are all on an external HD, Lacie 500 GB going through firewire to the laptop. The destination for the MPEG-2 files is the laptop's HD.
