Compressing For Web ?

I'm trying to post a trailer on my website. I'm using SORENSON SQUEEZE 4.1. Does anyone have any advice for finding the best setting, with the least amount of DATA. The trailer is 2:30, and the best I can do is around 20MB. Just seems far to big a file size for 2.5 mins. I'm not too familiar with all of the settings, but it looks like there are some advance features such as keyframing, that may help out.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, there are many options you can set.., and file size is only relevant with ALL the parameters you want.

I also recently got and played (A LOT!) with the settings. Here's my take for getting 'er done quick!

First figure out what size or sizes you want to make available - Small, Medium or Large (Use Apple Movie site for standards (although there are no industry standards).

Then decide wether you want to make available MOV (Quicktime) or WMV (Window Media) or both.

There are trade-offs: I started converting everything to MOV first.., then through comparisons of the same movie and paramters, I found WMV files to be smaller in size and ACTUALLY BETTER IN OUT COMPRESSION QUALITY! ( I have all the comps to prove it!)

I decided to use the Medium format, sizing at 320 x 218 pixels. I then played with all the buttons and switches..., I even watched the Ben Waggoner DVD on compression - and in the end the 1 factor (that I learned on my own - the DVD did a good job of overall explanations - but for some reason - and I can't figure out why - but the pro's always seem to miss the obvious, like offering a COMPARISON between the formats! or telling us what are the best OPTIMIZATION techniques! - he drops hints here and there.., but it was very dissapointing not to have all that in 1 place!)

The 1 factor - that ultimately drove the files size down is the DATA RATE! For the medium format, I set it at 160 Kbps - and I got a decent file size - while still retaining good output quality.

Try this - hope it helps!

Now, I got to run and figure out other issues with Windows Media!

try sorenson squeeze. Its a super easy program and gives the best results in my opinion. Clear with a small file size. Can't ask for better!

Seriously ... this is great advice. Often we assume that the default settings are "ok" but when it comes to DATA RATE you can really get cookin by lowering the default from like 6400 to 200 or so ... really makes a huge difference!
