Compressed capturing?

I am working on a documentary, and I'd like to capture all of the footage from each tape. Only problem is, this takes up about 40 gigs of space per tape, which isn't going to work for me. How can I capture footage compressed, then export it back to tape full quality? Anyone know? Thanks!

Well DV is already compressed and if you compressed it more there's no way to export it back at full quality.
First question is if you really need to import ever moment on tape.
If so you can capture at lower quality with compression and or smaller images. In this way you're doign an offline and the images captured will be proxies. Once you've edited the footage then you would have FCP recapture the clips you actually used at full DV quality.
