Compresed or Uncompresed?

When Captureing Footage on Final cut from a dvx100a at 24pa would it be better to capture it uncompresed for film transfer? I mean does it matter?

Re: Compresed or Uncompresed?

no, DV is compressed in a ratio of 5 to 1.
first, let's bring all this info in the computer.

better capture normal DV25, then drop the footage in a DVC Pro 50 timeline and apply "color 4:1:1 smoothing" filter. It will improve the color slightly. render and send the DVC Pro 50 tape (or DVD data) to the film house. Colors should be a slightly better than original.

If you want to go a step higher, then use the "broadcast safe" filter first , and THEN, use Graeme Nattress "G Nicer" chroma upsampler (DV 4:1:1) instead of the chroma smoother. It takes longer to render, but the results are amazing when the output is DVC Pro 50.

Graeme's filter recreate some of the lost chroma info. The colors will then look sharper.

Re: Compresed or Uncompresed?

Antoine,
What about if you are outputting to a 24f progressive DVD? Should I follow that same work flow, putting it on a DVCPro 50 timeline?

Re: Compresed or Uncompresed?

Mike,

Yes, i still see an improvement when i use DVC Pro 50 (24p or 60i) timeline to DVD. You must use a chroma smoother (or chroma upsampler) to take advantage of the DVC Pro 50 codec from an original DV25 footage.

Re: Compresed or Uncompresed?

Just to clarify a little...

If you're capturing direct over firewire, capture using a codec that is the same as what you've got on tape: DV/DVCPRO-NTSC for example. Why? You aren't actually compressing at all at the capture stage if you come direct from firewire: you're just copying already-compressed data from tape to disk. Using a higher quality codec is just adding overhead without improving your image at all.

That said, when you EDIT this footage, export it to another application, place it in a sequence, render it, etc. then there's some benefit to using a lossless, or lower-compression codec. Myself, when moving between apps, will use the Animation codec to ensure no loss and enable Alpha channels.

If you're capturing using a capture card or some such, then this advice does not apply. ;D
