Hi. New to this board and so have no desire to waste anyone's time, but could anyone recommend a decent tutorial package / book on basic compositing / keying techniques in FCP?
Cheers
Apple Pro Training Series books are what you want. There is
Apple Pro Training Series: Final Cut Pro 5
Apple Pro Training Series: Advanced Editing Techniques in Final Cut Pro 5
Apple Pro Training Series: Advanced Color Correction and Effects in Final Cut Pro 5
All these books readily available from all major book retailers. The last one is perhaps most suited to your request, but you should go through the first pair if you're not too familiar with the program. Additionally, check out Ken Stone's site, he's got lots of good FCP related tutorials, articles, and the like (www.kenstone.net).
I'd pick up the Apple Pro Training books from Peachpit Press. The chapters on keying will cover FCP's capabilities and tools nicely, plus the dvd will provide you sample footage to work with as you go through the lessons.
I'd also HIGHLY recommend DVgarage's DV Matte Pro for keying DV footage. I don't key DV footage with anything else.
They also have a very fast real-time keyer for Motion 2 called DV Matter Blast. It's also fantastic.
Best one on the market-
Apple Pro Training Series; Advanced Color Correction and Effects in Final Cut Pro 5
No better source for compositing in FCP anywhere. Explains all the Composite Modes, their classes, alpha channels, etc. If you want to really learn FCP's most powerful feature, Compositing, this is THE book to get.
The advanced Editing Techniques book won't tell you anything about compositing. It just teaches editing techniques, not so much how to use the FCP interface or how to do effects. But if you want to learn the art of editing (no nessisarily how to use FCP itself), it's a great book.
I'd also recommend the APTS book Optimizing Your Final Cut Pro System for all FCP editors, too.
