component to VGA for external?

I've heard that the RCA outs from the camera don't work so well with an external monitor.

I'm going with the lilliput 7" VGA monitor with 800x480 rez.

What exactly do I need to get the signal to the monitor? there's component to VGA converter boxes (which are expensive), and then theres component to VGA cables (which are cheap).

What's the difference? will just the simple cable work?

What type of camera are you using. I have a Canon XHA1 and it comes with a cable connection for component output into my monitor.
