component DVD recorders-which one?

I just picked up a Toshiba DR400. I tested it by recording something from Direct TV. The DVD plays fine in the DVD recoreder, but does not play on my PC, Mac, or either of my DVD players. So I thought it might have some kind of copyright encryption. Then I recorded something from my camcorder via firewire and still bubkis-nothing.
Does anyone have a suggestion in the less than $200 range?

You might want to re-read the user manual for your existing player. I know on my recorder (an older Philips), if you're using DVD-R media (or was it DVD+R, I forget), you have to "finalize" it before it will play back on any other player. Might be your problem.

you're right. it's not in the "recording" section of the manual. I looked up "playing recorded dvd's" in the index and it was in a different section of the manual. While I felt stupid and thought the manual should include it in the recording section, I'm happy with the unit now.

In the recording section, it says "press stop and finalize the disc". When you press stop on the recording, a progress bar appears at the bottom of the screen and says "writing disc". I thought that might mean finalizing too, but I was wrong.
