Comparable Indoor to Outdoor mic setup

This being my first post, I'd like to initially extend my gratitude to everyone who makes this board such an overwhelming wealth of relief and nerve settling. Can't say how much I've calmed myself down by checking up with you guys on here.

That out of the way, I seem to have gotten myself even more anxious over re-reading too many posts and have ended up completely confusing myself.

I'm having difficulty deciphering the intended use of the Sennheiser mkh416. I've been batted around by a few different posts on here and have seen both indoor and outdoor suggestions for it. I'm assuming that it's primarily outdoor. If this is the case, then I'd really be interested to discover what the ideal indoor counterpart would be for it. Preferably a Sennheiser. Is it the MKH50? ME66?

I realize this is a question of pattern (hypercardioid-indoor uni-outdoor), but I have difficulty in uncovering the pattern specifications for some of these mics. Any information here would be greatly appreciated. I'm certain that you guys won't let me down here.

Thanks so much.

416 is primarily an outdoor mic... it has no rolloff for bass and that, combined with it's short shotgun pattern, makes it unsuitable for many interiors. The 416 is an anamoly in my opinion however... this mic CAN work in many interiors, but I would NEVER bet the farm on it... when it won't work it won't work no matter what... but sometimes you'll get in a large and/or padded room... perhaps shag carpet and naturally good acoustics... and in a room like that you could get away with it. As far as I know there are really only a couple of guns that could pull that trick off... and they're all like $1K+

The smart thing to do is to get a hyper for interiors and not try to play that game... as has been said many times a CS3e is the most likely to do interiors and exteriors, but even the most experienced soundguys who have a CS3 do not force it into interior duty unless the situation forces it. Ask Exile... he's got the CS3 and yet he's gonna' use the Schoeps unless it's run 'n gun and there's no time to change... using hypers indoors is just the way it's done... but the real world shooting situation might say you have to get a shot NOW... so while it's cool to have a gun that can sometimes crossover... it's still not the preferred tool for the job.

The interior counterpart to a 416 would be either an mkh50 or a Schoeps 641... and possibly a few other debatable hyper choices.

You shouldn't have ANY trouble finding the patterns of the mics... they say so right after the names... right in the description.

Matt, I owe you my life. Thanks so much. I like to finally get the chance to solidify something in my head as CORRECT. Rarely does that happen with audio. Things tend to always become so flexible in approach that I find myself constantly questioning what I may have thought was the right method. Can't say that it's never not challenging or exciting. I guess that's what attracts me to it most. Anyway, I expect to take advantage of the expertise on display here a lot more. Thanks again.
