Compact35 design !

Hi all,

I dreamt last night of a new compact 35mm design, taking advantage of the super small-size of theses new AVCHD camcorder (Panasonic HDC-SD9, Canon HF10, etc). It features non-flipped viewing and recording, only 2 prisms to flip the picture, and therefore should be relatively easy to build.

Here it is !

interesting. But what about using wide lenses? You will get the camera in the shot lol

Hhhmmhh..

Well, yes... It will be recorded right..but wouldn't be picture flipped from left to right, when you flip the LCD to the front side?

I guess.. Not sure..

Tried this with a first surface retroreflector... seems like it would work well, but it isn't 'flopped' left to right. Originally the idea was to use the retroreflector to project the image onto a white surface on the opposite side so you wouldn't have the contrast loss that you get looking thru a plate of groundglass... but the light loss with something to flip it left to right made it completely impractical.

Cheers,
Dave

Leteeci: no it isn't, unless you activate some "mirror" function in your camcorder. So normally you get it right.

dave12781: your white surface gave me an idea to make the Compact35 even more compact ! I'll post a drawing soon

Wait wouldn't the image be flipped left to right? Not because of any mirroring or whatnot in the camera but because the prisms are only flipping top to bottom. There is not left to right flipping with this design, unlike a pentaprism.

yzmotoxer: normal picture (left-right ok, up/down ok) left-right flip comes from direct projection on a white surface, rather than back-projection on ground-glass - do the simulation :)

charlie anderson: maybe it'll be easier with the same design flipped up/down (lens down, camera up pointing down). Some metal bars should do the trick. Plus theses camera don't weight much (like 400gr).
