Compact Fluorescent Design

This is a photo of a design that I imagine would be easy to accomplish in DIY fashion.

Has anyone tackled this design before?

That's a cluster of 4 Photoflex Starlite fixtures--$150 X 4 fixtures + $150 for the speedring = $750. Mogul base for halogen globes (500W or 1000W) with protective pyrex shells.

Square speedrings are not that common. You may have a bit of trouble finding one. It'd be a little tougher to use a round, small plastic speedring to make a cluster of 4 CFL lamps. Also, with plastic, you definitely don't ever want to use tungsten lamps in it. Plastic speedrings are okay for CFL and great for flashes but a no-go for tungsten. To do this project, you'll need to find the biggest speedring you can and figure out a way to cluster 4 medium or mogul base sockets inside of it. Do you know the size/wattage of lamps you want to use and their base type?

My Mighty Mole has a large square Chimera speedring. It wasn't cheap, I think it might have been around $200.00 but it does look a lot like the one pictured.

Best,

Dan

Cool Lights, do you know of any online seller that carries mogul bases with screw in attachments?

That's what I see as being the only difficult part. Any metal workshop can make a metal square with four holes in it, but finding four bases that are rugged enough to be screwed into that may prove to be more difficult.

Of course thats why I'm Cool Lights:

Personally I'd choose one rated for HID use in case you ever want to do a metal halide bulb in it. So ceramic and rated for the higher voltage pulse. Will easily handle tungsten and CFL is good in anything including plastic.

This one is rated for HID use so you can use it with metal halide or anything else including CFLs"
