Commission Rates

I've been approached to assist in the production of a "zero budget" training video. What they're looking for is another camera and they want to pay commission only so I'm trying to figure out what will be fair. I have no idea's about the potential sales, how it will be tracked, etc. but I figure my equipment is worth at least $300 a day in rental fees and my time more than that! Since I'm fairly new in this field, I'm interested in building up some references and getting some material for my demo reel but what does everyone think about doing a deal like this? What commission rate I should expect?

You should expect not to get paid when people wsay they can't pay you your rate.
This means they cannot pay you your rate. Know that any percentage of nothing is nothing. If this is a gig you want to do for experience or for your reel, invest your time. Do not invest your time if paying the bills are what ya need to do. These gigs remove you from being able to market yourself to paying gigs.

Training for what? What makes you think there is any market at all for the final product? Sounds to me like they don't really believe in their product (otherwise they'd be willing to invest their own money in it) and they want you to work for free, pure and simple. Tell them "No thanks" to the "all the big money you'll make when we sell a million copies of these." Let them keep the big profits and pay you the going market rate for your skill and equipment or let them find someone else.

What i would do is say that you're going to invoice them and they have 6 months to pay you back and %5 interest after that. That should be fair enough.

Don't get tricked into commisions or shady producing percentages. There's no way of you actually seeing how much they really make off of this video, if it makes any at all.
