Commission Deal?

What exactly is a commission deal for Television? Everytime I try to look this up on a search engine all I get is crap about Film Commissions in the orginazation sense, nothing about payment types. If I'm not mistaken it's just a cut of the commercial revenue, right?

I've never been involved in one before, so I could be totally off track, but I believe a commission in television land is when a network 'commissions' a producer to produce a specific show for them. The show may have been internally developed by the network, or been pitched by a writer or producer, but the commission itself is just about getting the show produced.
