Commercial Production Companies

I am looking for jobs and was wondering if commercial production companies (you know the ones that list directors that work with them on their website) hire for production and post or do the individual directors hire camera operators/ editors etc.?

Post is often hired by the ad agency, although directors are (usually) welcome to offer an opinion -- especially with FX stuff where post people really need to be involved earlier in the production process.

How the hiring of actual crew goes, I'm not really sure. I know it's not the director's *job*, but I'm sure he/she has favorite people to work with and the producer will try to get those people.
