Comedy

Hi everyone! I had a question. I am working on a comedy.. and people say each scene should always be relevant...but is a little bit of randomness acceptable in a comedy script?

Why did you start 2 threads? You should probably delete the other one before Barry catches you . A little randomness is always okay, so long as it is not stupid.

That's what makes comedy hard. It's hard to be funny on purpose and not be silly, sappy, or corny. Randomness can be OK but you do risk loosing the audience if they can't easily follow where you're going. And then you're relegated to being a "far out artist" which is OK, unless you want to make money with your script or movie.

Everything should fit into your story, no matter how random it seems. Randomness is definitely allowed, but it should always move your story forward and reveal information about your main characters. This is true for any genre.

Comedy is very complex, and few do it really well. Just make sure you're a student of comedy, and understand how it works. Definitely more of an art than a science.

Good luck to you!

There's a book called... uh... **runs to bathroom and back** "Comedy Writing Secrets" by Melvin Helitzer. It doesn't cover film comedy per se, but has a couple chapters on similar issues. All in all though it goes through everything you need to think about when writing comedy.
