Comedy Gets Oscar!

"Comedy Gets Oscar" << Something you're not likely to see in the headlines.

Being award season I always ponder why comedies seem to get looked down at...

40 Year Old Virgin was nominated @ the Golden Globes but that's is a rarity. I dig comedies and really don't understand why no respect. :undecided

Is a comedy any less challenging to act or direct? I think Not!

Annie Hall won best picture.
That's something.

But you're right, for the most part they get snubbed.
I suppose that when we spend two hours laughing it winds up being difficult to take the movie seriously - it becomes a light funny thing, as opposed to something to be taken as a "serious work"

It's a shame.

richard roeper actually said something i agree with.. he said (roughly) "why are we so quick to award movies that make us cry and not movies that make us laugh? it's so much harder to make someone laugh than it is to make them cry"

Totally! - I can't count how many times I've heard an actor say "comedy is hard"

I don't suggest "Another Scary Movie" get best picture, but every once in awhile there is some good comedy work done.

agreed.... 40 Year Old Virgin was one of the best reviewed comedies in a LONG time. (not saying it should be nominated just pointing that out.)

For Oscar consideration, it's best to make a movie that is a drama set on a mountain - (Brokeback Mountain, Cold Mountain). :cheesy:

"A Touch of Class" was nominated for five Academy Awards in '74, and Glenda Jackson took home the Oscar for Best Actress. Both she and her co-star, George Segal, also won Golden Globes.

I love this movie. :)
