Combining Hi-Def with Standard in same timeline

I am working on a Doc and I have shot 65% of my footage in standard def (24p) and 35% in 720i (24p) using the new HVX200 video cards. What is everyone's advice on moving forward? Currently, it is an enormous amount of rendering just to complete small sequences regardless of settings.

You should media manage the project so that all your files are of one resolution and codec, otherwise that render bar will kill you and your project. Of course, if you have to convert hours of footage, it will take you forever. But it would be only once that you would have to do it, instead of over and over again.

I haven't uprezzed much SD in FCP, but I did do a small project with maybe 2hrs of 720p24 HVX footage that was downconverted to a DV25 project - and it caused me loads of troubles. The big problem was that long clips (10+ min) drifted out of sync after their down-conversion, and the other was that FCP didn't do a very good job of making the clip look nice when it was downrezzed. This was before FCP5.1 and QT 7.1, so they might have fixed it by now.

Your best bet may be to work out a hardware up or down conversion process for your footage. It might mean more expense, but it could save you a lot of time.

Good luck,
Garrett
